The Different Types of Roller Hockey Blade
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Defined Tag:

The roller hockey blade is an essential tool in the playing of hockey. This piece of equipment comes in a number of models, with varying materials and composites.

The roller hockey blade can sport a toe, heel, mid, or mid heel, curve type. Its curve depth can be slight, moderate, or deep, with its face angle slightly open, very open, or closed. The lie varies usually between 5 to 7. Toe shape can be round or square, and blade length can be short, medium, or long.

The roller hockey blade can support natural color, or color and graphics, which depends widely on the manufacturer, the use, and the make. It is most of the time found in dark and neutral colors like black and blue, with sometimes the graphics in flashy or bright colors like red and purple.

The roller hockey blade can be made of wood or synthetic fibers. Most often than not now, wood blades are crafted with graphite, glass, or Kevlar. This often provides the feel of wood, with the power of a stiff graphite composite. ABS hybrid blade is common too, and is recommended for both indoor and outdoor play. Carbon fiber construction allows for a thin blade profile, but with added power. Fiberglass reinforcement is often added to the roller hockey blade for added stiffness and strength. I-Beam construction can also achieve the same effect.

Molded carbon composite hosel allows for light weight, increased strength and stiffness, and is often combined with a shorter hosel length, which allows for quicker puck release. The hosel is an aspect of the blade which is given extra attention. This feature is often given a parabolic shape that creates a low, powerful kick point.

A waffle-core blade construction helps to reduce weight, and combined with a graphite laminate outer for added stiffness. Some models also carry a unique slim, molded rubber cover along the top of the blade that prevents chipping and premature breakage.
