The Specifics of Ice Hockey Goalie Skate
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Defined Tag:

Probably the most important player in ice hockey is the goalkeeper. On him will depend the outcome of attack, defense, and the overall score of the game. Is it a wonder then that so much importance to given to the ice hockey goalie skate?

The ice hockey goalie skate comes in a basic model, by most of the major ice hockey skate manufacturers. These skates share common characteristics of comfort, flexibility, and reliability. However, the spectrum of models and specifics available is huge.

All models provide an anatomical best fit, as well as secure ankle support. The shoe boasts an ankle extension, which is often supported by foam and insta-form ankle pads. These ensure proper fit and support around this primary pivot point. Most comfort foams used in the skates are designed to provide instant fit, thus reducing the need for break-in of the shoe prior to its actual use on the rink.

Comfort foams cover the whole length of the ice hockey goalie skate, ensuring maximum comfort. Foam bedding can also be found on some models, for increased comfort and ease of use.

Flexibility is another important aspect of the ice hockey goalie skate. Goalie specific warp flex lacing is available on many models, and some of these lacing structures also carry off ‘lace-bite’ guards to ensure more forward flex and comfort. These ‘lace-bite’ protectors also distribute lace pressure more evenly. Flex cuffs are also present on most models, which help maximize control by delivering enhanced forward and lateral flex.

Often made in Kevlar reinforced nylon, some have full-grain leather trim, as well as durable, anatomically shaped, two or three piece leather or felt tongues to provide maximum comfort, fit, and flex. The inside lining is often in natural microfiber, with foam backing, and the lining is most often designed to ensure fast breaking-in.

Some manufacturers’ customized fit system provides thermal and pressure accommodation for a gapless customized fit of the ice hockey goalie skate. Some liners also deliver water repellent comfort and anti-microbial treatment.

The latest to emerge on the market boasts a weight reduction factor in its skate, which combined with asymmetrical quarter design, provides a weight reduction of 10% or 103 grams, helping to reduce inertia and provide quicker and more efficient fluidity of movement and balance.
