What to Look for in an Ice Hockey Skate

For those who are avid hockey players are ready to go to the skate store to buy a new pair there are some things you should know before you do. An ice hockey skate is very specifically designed for playing hockey in. It gives your foot the proper support and protection. They are made for those sudden turns you want to make when chasing the puck. It’s the same as buying athletic shoes but instead they’re for using solely on the ice. Make sure this is what you purchase and not a figure skating skate because it’s less expensive or more attractive. You’ll easily be able to tell the difference because the ice hockey skate has a smooth edge all the way along the blade.

The next thing to decide, before you get to the store, is how much can you afford to spend. These skates can be very expensive. A beginners skate can cost up to a hundred dollars while a good ice hockey skate can be as much as two hundred and fifty dollars. If price is not an issue then a top-notch skate can cost you as much as three hundred and fifty dollars. Match your budget to your needs.

The two most important things in an ice hockey skate are ankle support and fit. The skate must fit your foot just as well as you’d want a shoe to fit; you want comfort. But when choosing a skate you’ll find that one size smaller than your shoe size is usually the best fit. Your skates must be snug; you cannot have your foot moving inside of it at all. That means that when you go to try them on you should be sure you’re wearing the same thick socks you will when you’re playing.

It is very important that your skates give you good ankle support. If you’re wobbly you’ll have difficulty skating and may do ankle damage when you play. Some players tape their ankles for this very reason, while others use longer laces and wrap the excess around their ankles. But if you buy the right ice hockey skate you shouldn’t have to do this.

Remember buy for fit not for appearances. The color of the skate or those cool stripes won’t make you a good player, the right ice hockey skate could.
